A recent data collection reveals that students identifying with the Islamic faith constitute the largest group in Vienna's elementary and secondary schools, comprising 41.2% of the student population. This represents a slight increase from the previous year's 39.4%. Christian students make up 34.5%, with 17.5% Roman Catholic and 14.5% Orthodox. 23% of students have no religious affiliation.
While Vienna fosters interfaith dialogue, studies indicate that Muslim youth in Vienna exhibit higher religiosity and more negative attitudes, including antisemitism, homophobia, and opposition to gender equality. To address these concerns, Educational Councilwoman Bettina Emmerling advocates for a mandatory subject on 'Living in a Democracy' starting in elementary school to promote shared values and democratic principles.
