Université Rennes 2 faced a €4.8 million deficit and implemented a financial recovery plan to avoid receivership by the French rectorate. The plan involved freezing 26 positions and suspending several online courses (EAD).
Five online courses were suspended: English, Spanish, Geography, Economic and Social Administration, and Sociology. Four courses were maintained: Psychology, History, Literature, and Breton, primarily due to financial stability and student enrollment.
The university president emphasized that maintaining autonomy was crucial. The suspended EAD courses represented half of the total EAD hours but maintained two-thirds of the student enrollment. The goal is to reach financial equilibrium by 2028.
Avoiding receivership prevented potentially more drastic measures, such as further staff cuts, increased tuition fees, or closure of underperforming courses.
