Agreement Reached to Reopen Sargadelos Factory

Sargadelos, a renowned Galician ceramics company, has reached an agreement with the Xunta de Galicia (Galician regional government) to reopen its main factory in Cervo (Lugo) after a temporary closure.

Reasons for Closure

The closure followed a labor inspection that revealed 36 deficiencies, mostly concerning worker safety (potential exposure to crystalline silica). The owner, Segismundo García, cited frustrations with multiple inspections and the bureaucratic difficulties posed by the factory's status as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Cultural Heritage Site).

Terms of the Agreement

  • The Xunta and Sargadelos commit to conducting a study of necessary worker safety improvements.
  • The Xunta acknowledges the factory's BIC status may require flexible deadlines for improvement implementation.
  • The Xunta pledges support for needed renovations.

A clarifying document confirmed that current worker exposure levels are within legal limits and deficiencies pose no imminent risk.

Impact

The agreement will allow the factory, employing 80-90 workers, to resume operations. A second Sargadelos facility in Sada remains open.
