Saprissa, a renowned Costa Rican sports institution, is venturing into futsal in 2025, establishing a new team named Saprissa Futsal. This isn't Saprissa's first foray into other sports; they previously had a basketball presence.
The team will play its home games at the Polideportivo de San Francisco de Dos RÃos, under the leadership of experienced coach Marco Carvajal, a former World Cup player. Carvajal expressed his enthusiasm about joining the team and his commitment to striving for victory.
Gustavo Chinchilla, Saprissa's manager, highlighted the strategic move, aiming to extend Saprissa's reach and leverage its massive fan base (over 1.5 million followers) to grow the sport. The futsal team is expected to be self-sustaining but will receive support from Saprissa in securing sponsorships.
The team's immediate focus includes participating in the Copa Tournament and the 2025 Premier League starting in May. Future plans involve integrating the Saprissa Academies into the futsal program, gradually and strategically.
