Stroud's Closure in Wichita

After nearly 30 years in business, Stroud's fried chicken restaurant in Wichita, Kansas, will be closing its doors in May. The owners, facing escalating costs, including food, building occupancy, and insurance, made the difficult decision not to renew their lease.

Reasons for Closure

  • Increased Prices: The restaurant raised prices three times in the last 18 months to cope with rising costs.
  • Changing Customer Habits: Post-pandemic changes in dining habits also contributed to the decision.
  • Maintaining Portion Sizes: The owners were unwilling to compromise on their family-style meal sizes despite rising prices.

The restaurant will hold one last Mother's Day service before closing permanently on May 15th.

History and Legacy

Stroud's, initially licensed from a Kansas City location, opened in Wichita in 1993. Its unique setting in a converted old barn and its emphasis on family-style meals made it a local favorite. The closure marks the end of an era for the community, with the loss of long-term employees and a significant catering relationship with Wichita State University.
