Meule Overmars Wafula, a Kenyan university student, developed M-KIONDO CHAPCHAP, a self-checkout system designed to improve efficiency in African supermarkets. Inspired by a frustrating shopping experience and a movie about retail management, Wafula created this system to address the common issue of long queues.
Developing M-KIONDO CHAPCHAP presented challenges in securing funding and assembling a skilled team. Despite these hurdles, Wafula persevered, securing support from mentors and advisors, and assembling a team including Dolphine Mwaitsi and Paul Wekesa. His innovation earned him the Baraton Innovation & Entrepreneurship Award and was shortlisted for the Presidential Innovation Award.
Currently partnering with the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, for real-world testing, Wafula plans to expand M-KIONDO CHAPCHAP to the broader retail market. His vision extends beyond this invention, encompassing the creation of an innovation hub to support other young entrepreneurs in Africa.
