Sporting de Gijón is close to appointing Asier Garitano as their new coach. Negotiations are underway, and while not finalized, Garitano is the frontrunner.
Garitano, 55, boasts extensive experience in the second division of Spanish football (LaLiga2). His past successes include leading Leganés to promotion to La Liga in 2015-2016. He has managed several teams including Tenerife, Real Sociedad, and Leganés, accumulating 174 matches in Segunda.
Pablo MachÃn, former coach of Girona, Sevilla, and Espanyol, was also considered. However, significant financial and bureaucratic differences hindered his potential appointment.
If negotiations proceed as planned, Garitano will take charge of Sporting Gijón for the final eight games of the season.
