Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles, significantly damaged in January wildfires, has temporarily relocated to a refurbished former Sears store in Santa Monica.
The new facility, named 'Pali South,' houses 90 classrooms, and other spaces created using insurance funds, donations, and school money.
Students and teachers expressed relief at having a physical space to meet after months of online learning following the disaster.
The 1947 Sears building, a local landmark, has been transformed. Its appearance has changed, with a new school sign replacing the former Sears signage. Faculty are making efforts to create a familiar atmosphere.
Pali South will serve students for the rest of the school year and potentially longer, depending on how quickly the original campus can be rebuilt. Around 40% of the original school was destroyed.
