GEORGETOWN — A Georgetown County school board member has resigned just months after she was elected.
Kristie Baxley was elected in November to represent District 6, which covers a swath of the Pawleys Island/Litchfield Beach area of the Waccamaw Neck. In a letter released by the school district, Baxley didn't elaborate on her decision for resigning other than to say it was for "personal reasons."
"I greatly appreciate the experience and opportunities I was given to meet incredible staff and students, bring a fresh perspective and make a positive difference," Baxley wrote. "I did not make this decision lightly."
Baxley could not be reached for comment. Her resignation is effective April 9.
A special election will be held on July 8 to fill her seat on the board, said Aphra McCrae, the county's director of elections and voter registration. Candidate filing will open April 25 and close May 5. Early voting will begin June 23.
Baxley's seat will remain empty until the election.
At an April 1 meeting, school board members Randy Walker and Eileen Johnson said it was a pleasure to work with Baxley during her brief stint on the board and wished her well in her future endeavors.
"I hope she continues to work with us in the next stage," Johnson said.
