Heading into summer months, this last hard winter is on the mind of Chagrin Falls village officials, who are targeting unbudgeted funds to add to their annual road program.

In specific, an additional $100,000 will result in the upgrade of Cleveland and Mill streets near the Spillway site, elevating the work from large patching to an entire repaving. This represents an alternative road project which would add $100,000 to the $250,000 already budgeted for this year’s program.

“Last winter was more significant than recent winters,” Chief Administrative Officer Rob Jamieson explained, resulting in frequent freeze and thaw cycles that damaged and deteriorated pavement village wide.

The work involves doing a full milling and repaving of the two streets, from Bell Street to North Street. This area is also getting a heavy traffic load due to the bridge work on North Main Street, Mr. Jamieson noted.

“The roads took a particularly hard beating after the budget was completed in late 2024,” Mr. Jamieson said. “We believe this additional expense can be funded without dipping into reserve funds at this time.”

The work, while not imperative, is also in response to the needs in the community. It will be done in addition to the already approved projects to fully repave roads this year, including North Main Street from Washington to Summit, North Franklin Street, West Orange Street and Vincent Street, as part of the hillside stabilization project.

Large patches and partial lane paving will also take place on High and Olive streets as well as Church and Center streets, among others.

Mr. Jamieson said council members had discussed pushing back the picnic shelter in Riverside Park to earmark that money to road repairs.

“We wanted to show results quickly and get the worst sections of the village addressed immediately at the most reasonable cost,” he said.
