Berkeley County School Board member Dr. Crystal Wigfall has officially resigned, citing health challenges as the reason.
Wigfall, representing District 8, announced her decision in a Facebook post this past week, stating that Feb. 10 would be her last day on the board.
βTonightβs school board meeting was a bit emotional for me as it will be my last meeting as an elected official for Berkeley County School Board, District 8,β Wigfall wrote. βI am experiencing some health challenges, and after prayerful and thoughtful consideration, I have made the decision to relinquish my seat to prioritize my health and well-being.β
Wigfall was first elected to the board in 2022 and previously served in District 3 and a leadership role as board secretary. In her resignation post, she expressed gratitude for the experiences and lessons she gained during her tenure.
βIt has been a pleasure to assist the students, faculty, staff and parents of Berkeley County School District,β she wrote. βI have obtained some great experiences and lifelong lessons since being a leader on the Berkeley County School Board.β
A special election has been scheduled for May 6 to fill her vacant seat. According to the Berkeley County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, candidate filing will open at noon Friday, Feb. 28, and close at noon Monday, March 10.
