On April 26, 2025, fraudulent messages were sent from the WhatsApp account of Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino. These messages requested money transfers of $960, promising repayment within two hours. The messages also included invitations to exclusive groups and requests to participate in surveys.
The incident triggered an immediate security alert. The President's IT and Security team investigated and confirmed the compromise. Astrid Salazar from the State Communication team reported the fraudulent activities, highlighting the various deceptive tactics used by the perpetrators. At the time of the report, President Mulino was unable to access his WhatsApp account.
The public was warned against responding to any messages or codes sent from the compromised account. A tweet by Astrid Salazar urged caution and highlighted the false messages.

“¿Podrías hacerme el favor de prestarme 960.00 por transferencia? Te los devolvería en un estimado de dos horas máximo, con total seguridad. Es que debo hacer un pago urgente y estoy teniendo problemas con mi banca en línea”, decía el chat.
De inmediato, saltaron las alarmas tras el sospechoso mensaje, y el equipo de Informática y Seguridad comenzó a verificar la situación.
Piden dinero a través del WhatsApp del presidente Mulino.“Están pidiendo dinero, invitación a grupo selecto, votar en encuestas, etc. Están enviando un código a los contactos desde su WhatsApp para que las personas se unan a un grupo selecto”, explicó Astrid Salazar, del equipo de Comunicación del Estado.
Por el momento, el mandatario no puede acceder a su cuenta de WhatsApp.
