Guatemala's Fuego Volcano, considered Central America's most active, erupted on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, prompting the evacuation of nearly 800 people from nearby communities in Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepequez.
The eruption caused plumes of ash and smoke to reach heights exceeding 7,000 meters. Authorities established shelters in five communities. Schools were closed, and a major highway was temporarily shut down. One evacuee, Celsa Pérez, expressed her relief at leaving her home to avoid potential tragedy. The eruption is expected to last about 40 hours.
The Fuego Volcano (3,763 meters) is one of three active volcanoes in Guatemala. It previously erupted in March 2025, also causing evacuations. A significant past eruption in 1932 sent ash as far as El Salvador and Honduras.
