Sentiero steps into Maiden Lane shoe scene
To the outsider, it might appear as if San Francisco’s entire sartorial extravagance is centered around Maiden Lane. Housing such fashion powerhouses as Marni and Tory Burch, the compact alley dazzles with colorful prints, sparkly accessories and daring cuts against the city’s simple and utilitarian backdrop.
It is, no doubt, the perfect home for Sentiero, a new shoes and accessories store. Owner Ellada Yuryeva, who was born in Russia, decided to focus exclusively on Italian brands, which, by Russian and international standards, are considered to be the top of the market. She also decidedly went big, curating bold shoes and conversation-piece clutches. Occasional flashes of fur and rhinestones dot the display, and a fashion-forward, flamboyant men’s selection.
Sentiero, which means “alley” or “lane” in Italian, is a narrow space with ample shelving, hosting big names like Giuseppe Zanotti along with relatively unknown brands. Artioli, specializing in men’s shoes and belts, is a brand that suit lovers and urban dandies will welcome. Loriblu is girly and embellished, featuring stilettos adorned with 3-D flowers and limited-edition shoes and clutches carrying a face sketch inspired by Paul Gauguin’s Polynesian-theme masterpieces. Nando Muzi specializes in pastel creepers and skyrocketing platform sandals, and Ballin in ladylike pumps and soft leather moccasins. Many pairs have a matching evening bag, a good percentage of the shoes feature heels for stiletto warriors, and some of the brands are exclusive to the Bay Area or new on the U.S shoe scene.
The price range is very Maiden Lane, with some pleasant surprises in the mix; shoes and accessories start at $320 for Giuseppe Zanotti flats and climb to $1,300, or $2,000 for special editions of Artioli. The unapologetic glamour Sentiero brings to Maiden Lane’s already stunning fashion party is, however, quite priceless.
