Monday saw a full slate of action from the diamond, as four Yuma teams were active at the plate all around Arizona.

In the main event of Monday’s slate which saw players, coaches and fans from all around Yuma flock to the contest, Kofa (9-9) dominated Gila Ridge (3-15), winning 9-0 in front of its home fans.

The Kings broke through in the bottom of the first inning, as junior catcher Ryan Rosas doubled after the Gila Ridge center fielder slipped and fell, allowing the ball to drop. Junior shortstop Julio Reina walked, allowing senior left fielder Jose Castro to double down the third base line to score Rosas. Senior right fielder Daniel Zazueta flew out to right for a sacrifice fly which brought in Castro.

Gila Ridge finessed its way out of a two-on, nobody out jam in the bottom of the second, but Kofa got back on the board in the third. Sophomore second baseman Ozzie Ortiz beat out a throw from second on a debatable call at first base, then proceeded to run all the way around to score after a pickoff attempt by Gila Ridge junior righty Jacobo Hernandez soared past the glove of his first baseman and well into foul territory. Ortiz slid in safely via a contested play at the plate, but GR senior catcher Truett Jaca could not hold on to tag Ortiz out.

Kofa stacked runners on second and third with one down in the fourth, as Castro struck again for a two-run single, extending the lead to 5-0. Zazueta brought in a run after an error by the Gila Ridge third baseman, before Kofa senior infielder Leovanny Reynoso scored Zazueta via a double to right center.

Kofa scored two more in the final innings to win 9-0.

Castro was the hero for Kofa, manufacturing a 3-for-4 day with four RBI. Rosas was the other King with a multi-hit day, contributing two singles. Kofa sophomore righty Gael Vargas locked down the contest with a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits with four strikeouts to boot.

Kofa tagged five earned runs on Hernandez, who walked six and struck out none. Only three Hawks had one hit each.

Gila Ridge plays its second of four games in four days this week at Cibola this afternoon. Kofa has the remainder of the week off before the first of a home-and-home set with Cibola next Tuesday.

Yuma High (15-5-1) trampled Westview (8-11) 12-2 in five-inning run-rule fashion on Monday at Doan Field.

The Crims scored two in the first before a four-run second broke the game open. They tacked on another in the third, a trio in the fourth and a pair in the fifth to secure the run-rule W.

Seniors Jaime Ruelas and Devin Aguirrebarrena, as well as junior Ethen Schmidgall, had multi-hit days at the plate. The seniors brought in three runs between the pair.

Eight out of nine Crims’ starters recorded a hit in the win for a grand total of 11.

In perhaps the craziest moment of the contest, YH senior infielder Isaiah Villalobos Orozco reached on a dropped third strike that was thrown over the head of the Westview first baseman, moving the Criminals’ infielder all the way around to third while two runs came in to score with ease.

Senior lefty Juan Ayala took the bump for Yuma, throwing five innings where he allowed two runs on one hit and four walks. He struck out one Westview player on a day where it seemed like all the Knights did was swing at everything.

Yuma High plays against Cortez in a doubleheader this afternoon.

Lake Havasu 6, San Luis 3
