Brazilian Environment Minister Marina Silva faced significant criticism during a Senate Infrastructure Committee hearing. The opposition, and even some government allies, attacked her.
Notably, senators from the governing coalition failed to defend Silva, highlighting her apparent isolation within the executive branch. This lack of support is attributed to her criticism of a recently passed environmental licensing bill.
Senators Marcos Rogério (opposition) and Omar Aziz (government) targeted Silva. The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner, only briefly attended, and fellow PT senator Rogério Carvalho remained inactive.
Sources within the Planalto Palace suggest Silva's isolated position stems from her negative comments about the accelerated passage and weakening of the environmental licensing project in the Senate. She described the vote as rushed and the final Senate proposal as inferior.
