The crowd at Whataburger Field was a testament to what high school baseball means in South Texas and it had a chance to witness some history and late-inning heroics.

Over two days and two games at the home of the Hooks, nearly 14,000 fans came through the turnstiles to watch Moody and Ray high schools battle for a spot in the Class 5A state tournament.

Moody won 3-2 with some of its trademark late-inning magic on Friday, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to sweep the Class 5A Region IV final series 2-0. Beyond the victory, the atmosphere at the stadium was something the coaches and players will relish for years to come.

“We all took a step back and we just soaked it all in,” said senior Moody infielder/pitcher Marcus Cantu, who had the game-winning hit on Friday. “You don’t get crowds like this and not every high schooler gets that many people here just to watch them play. It was really cool seeing Corpus come together to watch baseball.”
