Not only did a man avoid serious injury in the collision with a power pole on the city’s northeast side Wednesday morning, he wisely stayed in his car and avoided contact with the live power lines in the process.

The man was traveling on Hendrix Street in the area of Epworth Street when a dog ran into his path. In swerving to miss the animal, he collided with a Duke Energy transmission pole.

While the man avoided serious injury in the initial incident, he could have met an even worse fate had he gotten out of his car and come into contact with the live wire that was down nearby.

“People should know to stay in their car until we get there because that wire was energized,” Duke Energy District Manager Rick Burger told The Brazil Times.

Instead, the man waited in his car until emergency responders and, most importantly, Duke line workers could arrive on the scene.

After they had safely gotten the man out of his car, Duke workers spent the remainder of the day setting a new metal pole in place of the old one. A number of customers in the city were without power for much of the day, but it was restored by Wednesday evening.
