A high-speed police chase ensued in Horry County, South Carolina, after a driver refused to stop for traffic violations. During the pursuit, the driver reportedly threw multiple packages out of the vehicle's window.
Police recovered 11 kilograms (25.3 pounds) of fentanyl, with an estimated street value exceeding $1 million, from the locations where the packages were discarded.
The chase culminated in a crash near Pine Island Road in Myrtle Beach, resulting in injuries to the driver and at least one bystander, along with damage to several vehicles. The incident also involved the Coastal Grand Mall parking lot.
The driver is expected to face charges upon release from the hospital.
A driver who led Horry County Police on a high-speed chase Thursday allegedly tossed more than 25 pounds of drugs out of the window before he crashed and was caught.
Police said the chase began before 4 p.m. when an HCPD officer attempted to stop a truck for traffic violations near Fantasy Harbour Boulevard and Forestbrook Road, according to an HCPD Facebook post.
The driver fled and police began to pursue the vehicle. During the chase, the driver could be seen repeatedly throwing packages from the window of the vehicle, the post said.
The driver began behaving erratically before ultimately crashing near Pine Island Road in Myrtle Beach, the post said.
Part of the chase led officers into the parking lot of the Coastal Grand Mall.
At least one bystander was injured and a number of vehicles were also damaged during the accident.
Officers searched the locations where the items were thrown from the vehicle and recovered 11 kilograms, or 25.3 pounds, of packaged fentanyl, which has a street value of more than $1 million, police said.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to an area hospital due to injuries sustained when he wrecked his vehicle into other area vehicles. The driver is expected to be charged after being discharged from the hospital, the post said.
