Smithland Pet & Garden Center is closing all 13 of its locations, including stores in Northampton and Hadley.

In an email to the store’s reward card holders, Smithland CEO John Atkins cited the inflation over the last several years and “difficult economic and competitive conditions,” as a reason behind the closure.

“This decision did not come easily,” Atkins wrote in the email. “The trust and loyalty you’ve shown us over the years have meant more than words can express.”

The Northampton and Hadley’s locations, along with four others, were originally known as Dave’s Soda and Pet City. The store’s original owner, Dave Ratner, transferred ownership to Smithland in 2019 after more than 30 years at the helm. Ratner, a member of the National Retail Federation, was known for making several appearances before Congress and the White House.

Other outlets in the chain were formerly known as myAgway stores. Smithland has been open in Connecticut and western Massachusetts for four decades.

“From puppy food to perennials, wild bird seed to outdoor cooking and furniture, we have proudly helped our communities care for their homes, gardens, and animals since 1985,” the company said in a statement annoucing the closings.

According to the email, the closure will occur sometime between now and the end of June. The store will hold a customer appreciation sale until Sunday, offering 10% sale on all items ahead of a planned liquidation sale.

“It’s our way of showing gratitude for your support, your smiles, and for letting us be part of your homes and backyards for so many years,” Atkins wrote. “We hope you know how deeply thankful we are to serve you over these many years.”

The Northampton store is located in the Big Y Plaza at 142 North King Street. The Hadley store is located in the Whole Foods Plaza at 335 Russell St.

Beyond Northampton and Hadley, the store has four other locations in western Massachusetts, in Agawam, Ware, Ludlow and Westfield. The store also has seven locations in Connecticut.
