An Italian freeride skier, approximately 40 years old and a member of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), died after falling into a crevasse on the French side of Mont Blanc's Vallée Blanche.
The accident occurred around 11:20 AM at an altitude of approximately 3,000 meters. The skier was part of a group of about 20 people. It's believed the snow cover gave way as he crossed a snow bridge, causing him to fall around 30 meters into a crevasse.
A lengthy rescue operation was undertaken by the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute-Montagne) of Chamonix, using a helicopter. Despite the rescue efforts, the skier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Socio del Club alpino italiano (Cai) si trovava sul versante francese del massiccio del Monte Bianco per un'uscita in fuoripista insieme a una ventina di persone. L'incidente è avvenuto a circa 3.000 metri di quota, verso le 11.20. Probabilmente al suo passaggio sopra un un ponte di neve, la coltre bianca ha ceduto sotto gli sci. L'uomo è così sprofondato in un crepaccio, una fenditura del ghiacciaio, per circa 30 metri. Al termine di una lunga operazione il corpo è stato estratto dai gendarmi-soccorritori del Pghm di Chamonix intervenuti in elicottero. A nulla sono valsi i soccorsi: il decesso è stato dichiarato sul posto.
