Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Tom McGill has signed a new two-year contract.

The 25-year-old back-up has been with the club since the age of 14. He spent the first half of the campaign on loan to League Two side MK Dons, making 25 appearances before returning to understudy first choice Bart Verbruggen and No 2 Jason Steele.

“Tom has been an important part of our goalkeeping team for a long time, and we’re pleased to see that continue,” head coach Fabian Hurzeler said. “He gained some valuable experience with MK Dons this season and we’re confident that Tom will continue to improve with us.”

McGill received his first call-up to the Canada senior squad in March 2023 and he was part of his country’s Copa America squad last year.

His new contract until June 2027 comes after Carl Rushworth indicated he wants to leave Brighton unless his chances of game time improve. The 23-year-old returned from an injury-hit loan spell with Hull City in the Championship in the first half of the season to sit on the bench for 12 Premier League games in succession from January while Steele recovered from shoulder surgery.
