私が懸念しているのは、日本や韓国、欧州といった「友人」から「米国は予測不能で信頼できない同盟国」として見られてしまう可能性だ。その場合、日本などにとっても自国の防衛や中国との関係の在り方において、非常に難しい状況に置かれるかもしれない。
日本を含むアジア太平洋地域は過去数十年間、驚くほど安定してきた。強固な民主主義を擁し、健全な経済を持ち、平和を享受してきた。米国が、これまで機能してきた安全保障や経済の枠組みを解体しかねない言動を取ることに非常に不安を感じている。
欧州との関係についても、そもそもトランプ政権は欧州の安全保障については各国がより多くの責任を持つべきだとの考えだ。これに追い打ちをかけたのが、関税を巡る問題だ。なぜなら、「あなた方（欧州）は我々にとって特別ではない」というメッセージを送ることになってしまったからだ。今後欧州との関係は弱まっていくだろう。
